Mini-Bio: Herbert Fleishhacker

A San Francisco native, Herbert Fleishhacker left school at age 14 to begin working at his father's paper box company. In 1907 he became a banker. In 1918 Fleishhacker was appointed President of the San Francisco Park and Recreation Commission, a post he would hold for many years. In 1924 he opened the Fleishhacker Pool in San Francisco, famed as the world's largest saltwater swimming pool, which remained in operation until 1971. In 1929 he founded the Fleishhacker Zoo next to the pool, which later became the San Francisco Zoo.
