Landmark and Historic District Designation Procedures

The National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 defines an historic resource or historic property as: “any prehistoric or historic district, site, building, structure, or object included in, or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places; such term includes artifacts, records, and remains which are related to such a district, site, building, structure, or object.”

The California State Historical
Resources Commission is a nine-
member state review board,
appointed by the Governor, with
responsibilities for the identification,
registration, and preservation of
California's cultural heritage.

The National Register of Historic Places
is the Nation's official list of cultural
resources worthy of preservation.
Authorized under the National Historic
Preservation Act of 1966, the National
Register is part of a national program
to coordinate and support public and
private efforts to identify, evaluate, and
protect our historic and archeological
resources. Properties listed in the Register
include districts, sites, buildings, structures,
and objects that are significant in American
history, architecture, archeology,
engineering, and culture. The National
Register is administered by the National
ParkService, which is part of the U.S.
Department of the Interior.

believes that communities can continue to
grow without losing sight of their past. They
engage in assistance with preservation
issues.

preserve and enhance San Francisco’s
unique architectural and cultural identity.

Outside Lands Western Neighborhoods
Project is an all-volunteer nonprofit group that
gathers historical information about San
Francisco's outer neighborhoods by
collecting photos.
